GALLERY PREVIEW-James Gallagher @ Pawn Works

The badasses at Chicago’s rapidly rising gallery with a mean streak of underground flavor were kind enough to send over some flicks and words previewing the upcoming show by recent Stussy conspirator and internationally known collage artist James Gallagher and they’re definitely something to check out.

As a collage artist, James Gallagher uses the medium to investigate human form and personal identity. He methodically pieces together images cut from discarded books, forgotten issues of National Geographic and the occasional vintage sex-manual creating forms that make up a uniquely new whole. Working very quickly, Gallagher’s images often create themselves, spontaneously resulting in works that feel impromptu. The finished works allow the viewer to examine a newly created, paused moment in time. The juxtaposition of imagery and provocative subject matter in his work creates themes that are based around physical relationships and enigmatic situations.

Gallagher’s work has been shown in galleries around the world. He has recently curated a series of exhibitions showcasing contemporary collage entitled Cutters (Brooklyn, New York 2009, Berlin, Germany 2010, and Cork, Ireland 2011) and has edited a related book published by Gestalten entitled Cutting Edges: Contemporary Collage. Gallagher’s art has been featured in magazines such as Arkitip, Juxtapoz, Elephant, Cent, NYArts, Twill and Lines & Shapes. His images have appeared in numerous books, including American Illustration, Communication Arts, and a variety of Die Gestalten Publications. The Italian independent publisher Cura Books is set to release a limited artist book to coincide with a solo exhibition at CO2 Gallery in Rome, at the end of this year. In addition, known lifestyle brand, Stussy will launch a series of Stussy x James Gallagher tee shirts as well as a video profile early 2012.

Gallagher earned a BFA from The School of Visual Arts in New York City. In addition to creating art, Gallagher is a Creative Director for a marketing firm and an Instructor at Parsons the New School for Design. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife and three kids.

Captivated by the secret behavior of human beings, James Gallagher’s newest exhibition ‘Frequent Fits’ features examples of some of his strongest works and most gracious attempts at freezing time and revealing to the viewer a world of which is unknown.

Fantastic work huh? Plus it’s sponsored by the brand that brought collabs with groups like the Low End Theory and did a documentary on Dilla and showing at one of the most exciting new galleries in the city? Definitely a show to check out if you’re in the Chicagoland area. Or take a train in to see.

‘Frequent Fits’ opens on October 8th from 7-10pm at Pawn Works Gallery, 1050 N. Damen Ave, Chicago IL.
